What to Do in the 24 Hours After a Breakup

Your foolproof survival plan for getting through having your heart broken 😰

The 24 hours after a breakup can often be the most brutal. You’re in shock, disbelief, denial … and that’s all just in the first few minutes. And whilst there’s, unfortunately, no shortcut to getting over someone other than time, there are a few dos and don’ts that can help make it easier in the immediate aftermath and in turn make the recovery process a whole lot smoother.

Cut off communication…

Full disclosure: this will be insanely hard. However, this is the time to go deep into hibernation and avoid contact with your ex. You’ll be oh-so-tempted to reach out to He/She Who Must Not Be Named so be brave and block all forms of communication—that means text messages, email, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, carrier pigeon… if you used it to communicate with each other it’s now banned. Give yourself time to grieve and process everything that’s just happened minus any distractions.

Log off…

It’s going to be beyond difficult to go offline but the last thing you need is a reminder of life pre-breakup. It will just feel like you’re being punched in the gut repeatedly. So, go cold turkey and steer clear of all social media temporarily. You’ll survive, we promise.

Cry, cry, cry…

Go on, let it all out. Put on the most depressing song you can think of and bawl your eyes out. If you go through more boxes of tissues than any human should in a 24-hour period then so be it. It’s totally justifiable.

Avoid Tinder…

Now is not the time to hit up online dating. It’s a knee-jerk reaction and one that you might regret. At the moment your number one priority is looking after yourself. There’s plenty of time for swiping right later.

Call for reinforcements…

Whether it’s your best friend, your sister or your mum, this is the time to call someone who will listen to you vent and dissect every brutal detail of your split and offer unlimited cuddles without judgement. Even better if they’re the type to bring wine.

Eat your feelings…

If you need to ingest your entire body weight in chocolate then you’ve got every right to do so. Whatever your go-to comfort food is, it’s time to indulge. This is the time to engage in things that make you feel good.

Don’t make drastic changes to your appearance…

Dramatic haircuts, tattoos, colour changes… all things that are probably best considered once you’ve emerged from the breakup haze. You’re entitled to a post-breakup makeover but the immediate aftermath of a split is not the time to make an appointment with your hairdresser.

Make plans for the weekend…

You’ll want to stay busy during your first weekend post-breakup so be sure to make plans. Whether it’s that movie you’ve been wanting to see but never got around to because your ex wasn’t into it, a big girls’ night or simply back-to-back pampering now is the time to do it! Whilst the first day is always the hardest, it will get easier and it’s important to give yourself something to look forward to. You’ve got this.

Write down everything you want to say to your ex…

There’s probably a barrage of things including some choice expletives you’d like to say to your ex but resist the temptation to actually send it to them. To get it out of your system try writing them a letter. Unpack every thought, every emotion, every hurtful thing you’d like to say… and then rip it up. It’s cathartic and somewhat of a middle finger to everything you’re going through.
